The Genuine Importance of Home Decor… It DOES make a difference!
Is Home Decor really important? It’s not oxygen. It’s not water. Do we truly need to spend time & money on things to use and admire in our homes?
Sometimes when I think of a nurse, doctor, social worker, firefighter or emergency medical technician I wonder if what I do for a living truly matters in the scheme of life but today it was made clear to me that how we decorate in our homes is the reflection to our families, friends & visitors of what we believe in our hearts.
As I scrolled my FaceBook and saw image after image of 40 farmers from Ohio driving truckloads of supplies to farmers devastated by wildfires in Kansas I was reminded of grandmother’s wisdom & kindness.
The “Farmers Helping Farmers Ohio to Kansas” initiative was organized by my cousin’s son. I am touched by his love & passion for others. He was taught throughout his life to be this type of person by my cousin & her husband. My cousin’s mom & her husband raised her to be involved and to care for others. As I thought of my extended family and this incredible gesture to those in need my mind went into full “time machine mode” back to grandma’s front door in her living room.
Just like so many of us, she had a mirror by her front door. (After all it’s a good idea to take a look at yourself before heading out into the public!) Her mirror, though, was painted with a lovely floral design that flanked the word “OTHERS”. I was aware, every time I looked at it, that although it’s important to stop & think about myself I then need to re-direct my thoughts to others as I headed out into the world.
Others. A constant daily, (maybe even hourly), reminder to think of other people. Grandma wanted us to remember the struggles & joys of others. We learned it from her actions & from the little things, (like the mirror by the front door), that decorated her home so beautifully. In a world where there is lots of tension, stress and self-absorption these little reminders make a difference. How we apply home decor to our daily lives truly matters.
